Did you know that Terchová music has even made it onto a postage stamp? This beautiful gesture reminds us that the musical heritage of Terchová is not just a regional specialty, but a true treasure of Slovakia, inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
Stamp issue
Date of issue: October 2, 2023
Name of issue: Joint issue with Azerbaijan – Terchovská muzika
Nominal value: €1.00
Print run: 150,000 copies
Size: 30 × 40 mm
Printing technique: offset + screen printing
Alongside the stamp, a first day cover (FDC) with a thematic postmark was also released.
Design of the stamp
The main feature of the stamp is the two-string bass – a musical instrument typical of Terchová music. It is complemented by a graphic depiction of the Malá Fatra mountains, the homeland of this unique musical tradition.
Why is this issue significant?
It raises awareness of Terchová music as part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage.
It represents a symbolic link between Slovakia and Azerbaijan.
It appeals both to philatelists and folklore enthusiasts.
A culture you can still experience live
Terchová music doesn’t just appear on the stamp – you can still hear it today in Terchová itself: at weddings, folklore festivals, and the famous Jánošíkove dni.
If you stay with us at Apartment Adventourist, make sure to plan your visit to include an event with Terchová music. A tradition inscribed by UNESCO and celebrated on a stamp still resonates here in its authentic form.
