If you are looking for a trip that combines adventure, the beauty of nature, and the legend of Juraj Jánošík, then Jánošíkove diery is the perfect choice. This unique system of gorges and canyons is among the most visited tourist destinations in Slovakia and should definitely be part of your itinerary during a stay in Terchová.
The three parts of Jánošíkove diery
The network of gorges and ravines lies in the Malá Fatra National Park and is divided into three sections:
Dolné diery (Lower Holes) – easily accessible, suitable even for families with children. The trail follows a stream, with wooden footbridges and small waterfalls.
Nové diery (New Holes) – a shorter but very impressive route with several waterfalls.
Horné diery (Upper Holes) – the most attractive and demanding part, with ladders, chains, and rocky ascents.
Together they form a fascinating network of paths, bridges, footbridges, and ladders that guarantee an unforgettable experience.

Waterfalls and rock walls
The Dierový stream runs through Jánošíkove diery, creating dozens of small waterfalls. Steep rock walls and narrow ravines give you the feeling of entering another world – a world ruled by nature in its purest form.
Trails and accessibility
Entry points are from Štefanová or near the Biela medvedica Hotel in Terchová.
The loop through the Lower and New Holes is manageable for children and less experienced hikers.
The Upper Holes are designed more for those looking for adrenaline and who don’t mind ladders and chains.
The whole hike can be adjusted – you can take a short family walk or a full-day circuit that continues up to the Small or Great Rozsutec.
Legends of Jánošík
The name “Jánošíkove diery” recalls the legend that these gorges once served as a hideout for Juraj Jánošík and his band. Even if it’s more of a romantic myth, as you wander through the wild nature you can easily imagine it being true.
During your stay at Apartment Adventourist, be sure to set aside a day for a trip to Jánošíkove diery. Whether you choose an easier route or the adrenaline-filled challenge, an unforgettable experience awaits you.
