Terchová is best known as the birthplace of the legendary outlaw Juraj Jánošík. When his name is mentioned, every Slovak imagines the brave young man who “took from the rich and gave to the poor.” It was here, in the heart of the Malá Fatra mountains, that his life story began – and today it is commemorated by Jánošík’s Birth House.

A house that recalls history

Jánošík’s birth house is located in the part of the village called U Jánošov. The original wooden cottage has unfortunately not survived to this day, but in its place a reconstruction – a memorial house – was built.

Inside you will find:

  • an exhibition about the life of Juraj Jánošík,

  • period objects from traditional farming life in Terchová,

  • examples of how people lived in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The atmosphere is enriched with photographs, illustrations, and documents, which bring not only Jánošík’s life closer but also the broader historical context of his time.

A stop for tourists and school groups

The memorial house is open to the public during the season and is a popular destination for tourists, families, and school trips. It is a wonderful way to combine a nature outing with a touch of history and folklore.

A legend that lives on

Jánošík’s story has become part of Slovakia’s cultural identity. His name lives on in the statue above Terchová, the Jánošíkove dni festival, and the hiking trails of the Malá Fatra. Visiting his birth house allows you to touch the legend right where it all began.

During your stay at Apartment Adventourist, make sure to stop by Jánošík’s Birth House. You’ll combine hiking and relaxation with discovering the history that makes Terchová so unique.
