If you visit Terchová during the Christmas season, be sure not to miss the wooden nativity scene in the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius. It’s one of those places where time seems to stand still – the scent of wood, gentle light, and peaceful music create a magical atmosphere you won’t experience anywhere else.
Art Carved from the Heart
The nativity scene is the work of woodcarvers from Terchová, renowned for their love of wood and folklore. Every figurine, animal, and detail is hand-carved, carrying a piece of the artist’s soul. The figures of shepherds, musicians, and even Jánošík symbolically connect the story of Christ’s birth with the local culture of Terchová. The wood used comes from the surrounding forests of the Malá Fatra mountains – a clear expression of the connection with nature and local tradition.
A Nativity Scene That Grows with the Village
Every year, the nativity scene is expanded with new figurines and details. The result is a unique work of art that reflects not only the biblical story, but also the life of Terchová – featuring musicians, farmers, a shepherd’s hut, and sheep beneath Mount Rozsutec. During the Christmas season, it becomes a center of quiet reflection, where both locals and visitors come to light a candle, sing carols, and pause for a moment
A Place Filled with Peace
The interior of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is beautifully complemented by the nativity scene – wood, light, and silence create an atmosphere of peace that many of us long for during the hustle and bustle of the pre-Christmas period. If you come to Terchová in December or early January, be sure to stop by – even a short moment by the nativity scene will fill you with a peaceful, Christmas spirit.
While staying at the Adventourist Apartment, take a short walk to the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The wooden nativity scene, carved by the hands of local masters, is a beautiful reminder that Christmas in Terchová has a soul.
